What Is Self-Advocacy?
Self-advocacy means speaking up for yourself. It means knowing what you need, what helps you, and telling others about it.
Self-advocacy can help you do better in school, at work, and in life. It helps you feel more confident and make sure people listen to you.
Self-advocacy includes:
Knowing what you need
Knowing what supports help you
Sharing your needs with others
Self-advocacy is something you learn over time. Even saying “this isn’t working for me” is self-advocacy. At Family Matters PTIC, we encourage teens to practice self-advocacy, set self-advocacy goals in their IEPs, and join trainings and events to build these skills.
