Social Skills Curriculum at Shelbyville High School

Family Matters PTIC delivers a monthly social skills curriculum in the Shelbyville High School classroom to support students in developing essential interpersonal and communication skills. This program is designed to help students navigate social interactions, build relationships, and enhance self-advocacy in both academic and community settings.
Each session focuses on key social competencies, including:
Understanding emotions and self-regulation strategies
Effective communication and active listening
Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
Recognizing and respecting personal boundaries
Building and maintaining friendships
Social expectations in different environments (school, work, and community)
Family Matters PTIC teaches this curriculum because strong social skills are critical for students' success in school, employment, and independent living. Many students, especially those with disabilities, may struggle with social interactions, which can impact their confidence, peer relationships, and future opportunities. By providing structured instruction, interactive activities, and real-world examples, Family Matters PTIC empowers students to develop social confidence, self-awareness, and the ability to advocate for themselves in various life settings.
This initiative aligns with Family Matters PTIC’s mission to equip students with the tools they need for a successful transition into adulthood by fostering social independence and inclusion in their communities.
